Russell Wimbish is an American bassist, composer and researcher committed to performing and writing music that explores new pathways to creative spontaneous expression. As a composer, he embraces the idea that all creative activity is essentially collaborative. His works combine composition and improvisation, often blurring the lines between the conventions of genre, the roles of composer and performer, and even distinctions between musician and non-musician.
As a performer, Russell is equally at home in diverse settings ranging from traditional and modern jazz, contemporary classical, popular music and free improvisation. His playing has been featured internationally in festivals such as the Athens Pop Festival, Concurrent, Denton Arts and Jazz Festival, Dialogues Festival, Edinburgh Fringe, Jazz Improv Live! Convention and Festival, Indietracks, Make Music New York’s Lincoln Center Stage, New York Downtown Jazz Festival, North Texas Jazz Festival, Popfest! New England, New York City’s RTCA Summer Concert Series and Sound/Thought.
Russell has written for jazz ensemble, chamber orchestra, small ensembles, and solo instruments and has had his music performed across the United States and Europe. He is particularly interested in expanding repertoire for the double bass as well as exploring new applications for graphic notation and improvised performance. His compositions often dovetail directly with his research interests in graphic composition, improvisation, methods of musical communication and collaborative musical activity.
Russell currently lives in Brooklyn, NY, where he enjoys a busy schedule teaching, performing, and composing. He received his PhD in Creative Music Practice from the University of Edinburgh. Most importantly, he is a member of the Scotch Malt Whisky Society and will share his favorite bottle with you if you ask nicely.
